Commune of Anniviers
The pilot project
The district heating system in Anniviers is a perfect example of how multiple players can work together to promote the energy transition.
HES-SO Valais : After validating the concept, the Haute Ecole valaisanne is working with STEEN Sustainable Energy to develop the solution. It is carrying out various studies, and a mandate is underway to optimise certain aspects.
Commune of Anniviers : As soon as the network was created, an extension to the rest of the village was envisaged in collaboration with the commune of Anniviers, and the facilities were planned accordingly.
Local residents : Thanks to a desire to limit their CO2 emissions, some fifteen buildings are in the process of being connected to the municipal network, in addition to the initial 6 buildings.
Result: Reduction of 455 tonnes of CO2 per year and savings of 147,000 litres of fuel oil.

Tonnes of CO2 reduced per year

Litres of heating oil saved

Number of buildings to be connected

Tonnes of wood recovered

MWh of electrical energy produced

GWh of thermal energy produced
Quality infrastructure
Distribution
Thanks to a monotube, more than 15 buildings will be supplied with 100% renewable energy. The network running close to the new cable car building will enable it to be connected to the system to supply heat.
A number of hotels and private residences are keen to connect to the system to benefit from an economical and environmentally-friendly solution.
The SwissPeak Resorts tourist residence, with its 6 buildings and 250 heated beds, is also connected to the network.
The cold waste heat has been put to good use by developing a new tourist activity in the heart of the village of Zinal.
Pooling energy
After discussions with the local authority, an innovative solution was found.
Why not create an ice rink using cold waste?
What’s been said, has been done! As the original cold outlet was just a few metres from the proposed ice rink, a tube was installed to transport the cool air under the ice. As a result, this little winter treat has been extended and a beautiful ice rink is now available to tourists and residents alike in the heart of the village.
An additional tourist attraction for the village, while remaining 100% renewable.
